Two Thieves and a Wrought Iron Table

Look at this table. It is a heavy and solid wrought iron table. My five daughters had wonderful tea sessions, watermelon glory and main masak masak on it. Rudi and I had late night caps out in the garden after a busy day here. My maid shared many hours with Ikesha while waiting for the other kids to come home from school.

Now it is no more.

One scrawny looking boy jumped over our back gate with his white helmet still secured, placed the pot of bunga melur which was on the table onto the ground carefully and handed over the table to his friend. Bik arrived at the scene and shouted at them from the kitchen. This cool cucumber proceeded to load the chair over too before they sped off on their equally scrawny motorbike into the horizon.

Our poor Bik was totally shaken. The girls meanwhile, Ikesha, Irani and Ilena were upstairs. Irani, quickly locked the door and barricaded it with the long sofa. Bik called and I called the police from the office. When the police arrived, the girls finally came out from the room.

I am just glad everyone is safe and sound. I came home and after listening to the full description of the incident, thanked God for looking after my family.

Now, what do I do with one single wrought iron chair?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, yesterday, a flock of birds surrounded Bik while she was in the garden. She told me yesterday that the birds were chirping away while they ate from her hands. Never happened before. Now we are left wondering. Were the birds trying to tell us something?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remedy - treated Bik and the girls to bakso and nasi goreng at Medan. Then spent the night singing French songs - the girls practiced singing Frere Jacque, Allouette and Au Loin de Decembre for a'lliance francaise karaoke session. Finally, they drifted off to sleep.

More wrought iron table memories

Dear Angelina,
I bet the thieves knew exactly what time Cruikshank usually comes back from his neighbourly prawl/patrol. And struck right on time when Cruikshank was away.

Sir Remgold,
I thought so too...unfortunately it's getting worst in our area. We might opt for angsa though!

Dear Ayoh Wang,
I don't think so. Even in 1996 the set cost me a sizable chunk and it would just attract them again. We might get a teak or aluminiam set, pencuri tak minat!

I love these glimpses of your loving happy family - this must have been a nerve-wracking event. Talk about bold thievery! But I so love your descriptions of what everyone is doing, and how you all come together, with love, in every instance. Lovely to read!

once they took away seven copper water taps from our garden. So we put on seven plastic ones. And now the plastic has gone brittle exposed to heat of the sun. I just wonder whether we should install golden ones and put up a notice 'Touch this and you will turn to gold!'.

Wow what a true tale Ninotaziz! I am glad as well that your family is safe and sound. You will be able to get another table for your tea parties and make even more memories to share. :-)

what a pity. and to think that they could actually cart off a table as heavy as yours! i can't imagine what they want to do with it, sans chair too..

Dear Sherry,
The table, lovely though it was, was just a table. How we came through the experience...the incident gave the kids another learning curve and another family project - French Concert - was born! We are now adding the hand movements and a little bit of dance to the show!

Dear Pakcik,
I marvel/am shocked at their determination and true grit. Calm and methodical. Imagine if they channel this energy to something useful. The young....

Gold taps...I am now thinking what chairs to put in the garden. Imagine, choosing my furniture based on what would be least desired by thieves!

Arwah Encik, my late father, once told my Mum - No grills on the windows, No bars around the house. This is our home...not a prison.

Oh yes Carrie! I love the garden and every morning inspect how my little greens are. There will definitely be more tea parties and water balloon races here.

Dear Kak Kama,
This is the state of affairs...And you are right! They were on a motorbike, and that table weighed a tonne. Plus one chair too!

The 'unwanted' chair left behind by the thieves has joined my white rattan chairs under the shady area surrounded by fierce looking terracota pots - on guard!
