In reply to Sir Pok Deng:
Obviously I worry about the way hikayat and malay legends disappear. I am now trying hard to read syair in the jawi format as this is the origin and many are kept in museums in this format still.
Kadang kala terdetik hati berfikir, mengapakah hikayat Melayu, tradisi Melayu (wayang kulit, makyung, wau dsb) dipinggirkan dari aktiviti pelancungan negara. All you see is food, flora fest and shopping. Adakah kerana aktiviti kebudayaan ini terlalu berunsurkan Kemelayuan dan menyerlahkan budaya terawal di bumi ini adalah budaya dan bahasa melayu polinesia?
Pantun telah lenyap
Ditelan zaman
Syair lama lesap
Adakah berterusan
Inikah namanya
Ethnic cleansing halus
Tak disedari kita
Bangsa terus haus
Kering kontang.

I would not mind reading the jawi literatures.. and if I can help you in the process it will be all the more meaningful ;)
When I had to read my Syaer Dang Sarat for my thesis, I nearly cried - while there were very old words, there were words without those dots and dashes - but luckily my other half, coming from Terengganu could help me. and it became a challenge. Winstedt and Wilkinson soon became my companions and source of reference. and having a Russian seefu as my supervisor helped. But it was a challenge and I enjoyed it.
I have my own copy of Kitab Tajul Muluk. Tajul Muluk is not permitted for selling anymore. It is said Tajul Muluk contains "syirik" elements (there's a lot of kebatinan in it), which I reckon might be true to some context, but who am I to judge?
Tajul Muluk was written in jawi. A very ancient jawi. They say "hayam" for "ayam". I remember asking my Father what "laba" is. He said, the term normally used in market exchange (something like that) column in the newspaper.
If you start reading from the first page, you don't know how to stop. Why? Because it has no stop.
"Pada bab dua puluh satu ada menyatakan..." oh yeah, the classic. Can't just the author put "Bab 21: Ilmu Pelangkah Hulubalang"? It will be simple, won't it?
Old Malay literature, very full of fancy rigmarole.
Thanks Ayoh Wang. I am trying hard to become more fluent, as fast as reading roman if possible, as advised by my master, Prof Ding Choo Ming. It is required if and when I want to further my studies formally in this direction. Which looks like a strong possibility later on.
Aunty Ninot,
Come, let's have a date at Arkib Negara. Let's a Jawi reading orgy. Bring some packets of tissue as we may cry in frustration. purrr...meow!
Dear Kak Teh,
I am currently reading Syaer Dandan Setia. For 'light reading', and in Jawi, it is heavy. My mother loves this Syaer so much and that prompted me to look for it and read it. Same with syaer Ken Tambuhan. I was telling my grandma stories, Panji Semirang, like she used to tell me. She then asked me to tell the story Ken Tambuhan. Her last request to me was that I find Syaer Ken Tambuhan and write about it.
Whatever I do, hikayat lama is in my thoughts. For my five daughters. For their daughters. Insyaallah.
Dear Sir Pok Deng,
I read about Tajul Muluk and the ban on the original. I have not read the real version, but is it the story about the prince in search of bunga bakawali who saved his brothers from the princess who was master at chess, courtesy of her cat. And went on to the land of ogres to obtain the flower.
Only to betrayed by his brothers?
What beautiful legends, we should have our own Rose Theatre , maybe full of wood carving of seroja flowers and other ancient motifs....I dream that on any night we can watch Makyung or wayang kulit or taridra. What would the name of this theatre be? Kayangan ?
Dear Angelina,
Let's do that. And you would be the famous Jawi reading cat from Sydney!
Sob! Sob! Sob!
(Aunty practising heart felt sobbing on the floor of Arkib Negara)
Wah! Sudah mula membaca Syair Dandan Setia! Bagus!

Salam,
The last time I heard sajak, pantun, syair and gurindam being read aloud was at DBP's Gema Puisi Pahlawan in October.
I'd be delighted if there are more syair readings in the pipeline.
As for the emphasis on food and flora fests, similar subversive highlighting of the traditional handwork of the 'orang asal' (Orang Asli and Kaum Bumiputera in Sabah and Sarawak) and the Peranakans (Babas and Nyonyas) succeed in undermining the claims of Malay civilisations in Nusantara.
Baiti my dear,
Oh yes, this is exactly the way I feel. And I hope to make a difference.
Thank you so much for dropping by.
You have given me great encouragement.
