Dewa Serajuk di Sinar Runduk
Dewa Berembun di Sinar Naik
Masing masing tidak tunduk
Masing masing tidak berbaik
Dewa Serajuk ingin beristeri
Kepingin isteri seteru
Aduhai…Siti Andang Dewi
Puteri kayangan gebu
Dewa Berembun datang
Sebalik igauan dalang
Siti Andang Dewi ditatang
Dewa Serajuk menghilang
Turun ke bumi, terlahir
Putera Batara Baha
Manusia pada zahir
Itulah Maharaja Wana
Siti Andang Dewi tertipu
Bila berdepan suami tercinta
Maruah diri begitu malu
Turun ke bumi menuntut bela
Menghapus Dewa Sarajuk terkutuk…
***
Dewa Berembun begitu hiba
Apabila permaisuri menghilang
Dicari, diigau, dimimpi, dipuja
Malam berganti siang
Rindu tak dapat dibendung
Takhta di beri Dewa Yang Kenung
Negara kita baiklah dijaga
Beta turun ke bumi nyata
Inilah Canggar Api
Jangan sekali-kali leka
Kuasa bagai gunung berapi
Menghapus musuh yang ada
Manusia hancur, bukit runtuh, dewa cair

Maharaja Wana masih liar
Dihukum Batara Baha membawa diri
Bertapa Maharaja Wana terbiar
1000 tahun di Langkapuri
Akhirnya merajai seluruh bumi
Cuma negeri dihujung dunia
Sirat Maharaja nama diberi
Maharaja sungguh mulia
Beristerikan Mandudari jelita
Ibu angkat Dewa Berendam
Lahir mantan Seri Rama
Ingin melepaskan rindu dendam
Menjelajah mencari Siti Andang Dewi
***
Maharaja Wana beristeri semua
Beranak pinak makhluk durjana
Ular, gajah, rimau seluruh benua
Mengetuai angkatan bala
Namun Wana mencari isteri
Bakal bergelar Maharani
Kepingin pula Mandudari
Tidak berubah naluri
Akan tetapi Mandudari
Bijak akal, sakti berilmu
Mandi serum mengupas daki
Mandudaki jelmaan debu
Tiada cacat cela, dibadan
Wajah seraut, rambut seikal
Bagai bulan penuh rupawan
Rupa tidak dapat disangkal
Maharaja Wana terpedaya, leka ditawan
***
Mandudaki terus berpantang
Hilang bulan, timbul kandungan
Ahli Nujum bertilik rentang
Rahsia zaman berzaman
Anak ini dari kayangan
Datang menuntut hutang
Hutang malu zaman berzaman
Tuanku dalam bahaya karang
Bayi ditebus, di layarkan
Tasik tujuh, sungai pun tujuh
Tiba di penghujung pelayaran
Di wat Maharisi Empat Puluh
Siti Andang Dewilah bayi suci
Sampai ke bumi bergelar Siti Dewi
Dibelai dididik Maharisi Kala Api
Hingga anak dara sunti
Semua memandang, gila berahi

Niece piece of work..
I believed what written as Mandudaki is Mandudari in verse after mandi serum..
Mandi serum as I knew it was normally performed by ladies who has just given birth.. untuk pulihkan urat saraf - even my Chinese neighbor practised it.
Then again mandi serum might be used for something else in previous era..
It was noted that our Malayan ancestors might have practicsed hinduism or animism before the advent of Islam to Terang ganu or Malaka Sultanate..
psst.. can serum in English come from Malay word mandi serum.. ;)
Dear Ayoh Wang,
Perhaps serum is from mandi serum?
Mandi Serum is generally a rejuvenating bath. My grandmother thought me this when I was about 11 years old. But it is most commonly practised after giving birth.
In Kelantan, even 70 year old ladies bertunku and mandi serm. Something to be learnt by the younger gen like me :)
Mandudaki is Mandudari's clone. She materialised after Mandudari brushed off dirt/daki from her body, presumably from her DNA? The Malays were ingenious storytellers! It was Mandudaki who, after presented to Maharaja Wana, became pregnant with Siti Dewi.
Aunty Ninot,
OOooohhh...this reminds me of my obsession with Hikayat Inderaputra once upon a time. Where can I get a copy of such classic? Or Hikayat Panji Semirang for that matter? purrr....meow!
Salam, I truly love syaer - they are littered every where in my blog. It is so good to see and read syaer again. cat in sydney, I have a copy of Hikayat Indraputra - to me that is the best example of a fine art in flirting. I think Syaer Bdasari is romantic an beautiful as well. try reading it. Thanks ninotaziz for this wonderful read so early in my morning.
Dear C-f-S,
I have a copy of Hikayat Panji Semirang. Nanti I photocopy for you.. I have Syair Dandan Setia copy in jawi though, courtesy of the efforts of our good friend, Dr Bubbles.
Dear Kak Teh,
I too love Syair and am currently seeking the hilarious Syair Signor Costa and seem to be faced
with a blank. I remember reading its delightful cheeky verses but I
cannot recall where at all.
Syair Bidasari and Syair Ken Tambuhan are lovely, unfortunately I have only come across parts of it not the whole book. I must check out Syair Indraputra.
I try to write about these stories at www.ahikayataday.blogspot.com so that it reaches out to newer audiences.
Over at www.pantundanselokaninotaziz.blogspot.com I keep my pantun and syair hoping that one day, pantun will be back in mainstream.
i can also copy hikayat indraputra for cis. I did Syaer dang sarat for my MA - an unstudied syaer until then. The original is kept at the British Library and my friend found it and asked me to study it. it is so beautiful..so full of intrigue and history between the queens of Patani and the sultans of Johore. I did not publish my thesis but was quoted by my professor - a russian who is an authority on Hikayats and syaers and traditional malay literature. also, i believe my lecturer did a piece on Syae signor costa. let me find it for you. The wonderful thing abt teaching where i am teaching now is that, there's a treasure trove of hikayats and syaers at the library!! just let me know what you want and I can photocopy. btq, te syaers in my blog are less refined - kebanyakannya merapu, but it was interesting because once i start my readers would join in.
Dear Kak Teh,
I am overwhelmed and envious at the same time. How lovely to be able to read the old hikayats and syaer at whim and fancy. Actually, I am sure we might be able to do the same here tapi it takes so much effort to find these jewels.
And you have heard of Signor Costa! For some time, I thought it was a figment of my very fertile imgination.
The queens of Patani - inspiring they were. The three sisters and niece were saved by Johore and Pahang over and again. They must have been excellent strategists and enchanting too.
Sorry Kak Teh, I could go on and on about Hikayat Melayu, I know it is not usually everyone's cup of tea. To find you are interested in this is exhilarating. One of OG's pantun in Gganu speak is on my pantun blog, by his courtesy through a very lively discourse on pantun with Pakcik at Al-Manar...
Would appreciate all syaers in whatever form most gratefully.
ninot - sorry, can i call you that? I have a friend whose nickname is Ninot - if you are on FB , invite me and I can give you links. I am passionate abt this...but someone who was more passionate than anyone else I know - has just passed away - Name is Ian Proudfoot- an australian. He had compiled a compendium of malay syaers and hikayat. and people go there to discuss their area of studies. you might find this useful . It is called the Malay Concordance Project. Some of my friends or rather ahli dalam bidang2 ni - are there.
Sekilau si batu baiduri,
Secantik si dewi kayangan,
Seikhlas cinta di hati,
Segunung doa dan harapan.
Sehijau si daun sembung,
Sesegar mata memandang,
Seindah hikayat disambung,
Semekar teratai di tasik tenang.
Semegah pulau Nusantara,
Seteguh Alam Melayu,
Sekerap Hikayat dicerita,
Sedalam semangat dan ilmu.
Weldang Sir Pok Deng! Weldang!
Yes, I hear you say that.
well dang, sir pok deng!!!
Now it is getting more interesting.. with Kak Teh, CfS and Sir Pok Deng joining it.. It seem Kak Teh has many things to share with you.. Alhamdulillah!!!.
Welldang Sir Pok Deng! Welldang! In the midst of my daily chores, Kak Teh has also cheered your inspiring verse.
All it requires now are Pakcik and Sir Hanks. And Sir Awang Goneng to complete our annual tribute to our beautiful Bahasa ibunda.
I will go and invite them now. Tak berjemput, tak manis pula!
Dear Kak Teh
Will look for you on Facebook.
An Australian! Sayangnya I did not get to know him...a mate from 'tanah tumpahnya darahku'...looking forward to the Malay Concordance Project.
Please do call me ninot.
Ayoh Wang,
Now you have no choice but to try out serangkap dua...
Bukan tak ingin bersama, dan Pakcik tak perlu jemputan. Pakcik selalu bersungut Ninot ini banyak sangat blognya. Orang tua selalu sesat jalan. Orang lain ada sampai empat buah rumah tapi Pakcik ada satu saja - takut sesat tengah malam, rumah nombor empat disangka nombor satu!
Pakcik terbaca Ninot sebut berserum dan bertunku. Masa dulu dulu. Baringlah dia 'bertuku'.
Teringat ingat dia mandi 'serong'. Air sebelanga besar dipanaskan dengan pelbagai daun.
Itu ingatan seorang budak umur dalam lingkungan enam tahun - hampir TUJUH PULUH tahun yang silam - munkin bercampur impian. Wallahu a'lam.
Pakcik of Al-Manar,
My mom always did the bertungku. She would heat a cannon bullet on a dapur gas. After she thinks the bullet has absorbed sufficient heat, she would first wrap it with a few layers of old newspapers. Then, a piece of old kain batik will serve as the outermost layer. She would meet the opposite corners of the kain batik, tie it into a Boy Scout's knot. With bertungku, she would be able to relieve her sakit urat. The heat of the cannon bullet absorbed the muscle ache, I suppose.
And mandi serum is not an alien practice to me. That's because I'm a kampong boy... err... I mean, man.
A cannon bullet, Sir Pok Deng? Seriously? Is this bullet still around?
Sir PD,
Yes there were 'peluru bedil'(cannon ball}in those days. I remember oane or two of them in our ancient house, sadly being demolished when the state government heartlessly acquired the land right in the middle of Kuala Terengganu town.
As a child I used to go through lots and lots of old books of syair and cerita lama. It was all in Jawi and I recall difficulty to understand the ancient stories written in poetic form. It was all in the late 1940's. Yes there were a couple of cannon balls.
Ninot Ma'am,
Great verse. great syair! I can't imagine going into syair though, that's my snag. Just London speak! But for any grouping I'm in (not really knowing what I'm in for) But gladly though, I'm in! Thanks Ma'am!
Hank
P/S: Sorry late response, didn't see it
Dear Pakcik, when I think of all the manuscripts long gone.... I sigh. I have scoured my great grandfather's house too but could not find anything though Mak remembers them.
Well Pekan had several terrible floods.
Dear Sir Hank,
I know you shy away from creating pantun or syaer. But we will celebrate them anyway. From time to time we have been inspired to write pantun. Today Sir Pok Deng has burst into verse!
Thank you for coming.
